gun violence prevention task force in the house. this group was set up by nancy pelosi last month to be the voice of congressional democrats on reform. and it tells you something about the diversity of the democratic party on this issue, right, to be able to have nancy pelosi, who has the exact position on guns that you think she has, to have a nancy pelosi drafting leadership help on this issue from, among others, john dingell, a former board member of the nra, a former a-plus rated nra legislator. but for all of congressman dingell's nra bona fides, if you think that is the only thing worth knowing about him, you are missing a big part of the picture. six days after the shootings atlanta month, congressman dingell's wife, debbie dingell published a very personal op-ed in the "washington post." "when i was about to start eighth grade, my father almost shot my mother. it was another of their many ugly fights. i got between them literally and tried to grab the gun. i never forget that night. my calling for help, but the police not coming. my parents were important people in town. m

and a democratic majority in the house and nancy pelosi as speaker of the house and the time to have done something on gun control would have been then. but the first words that really made me think that something's wrong here is when nancy pelosi got up and speaking about george bush in their administration, that impeachment is off the table. it just blew my mind. >> bill: well, mine, too. mine too. we've talked about that, phillip. look, there's a lot of stuff that didn't get done then. those two years were the time to really push the agenda, right? and they didn't. but you know, that's water over the dam, if you will. now there's a new four years. there is a new opportunity and some new urgency and so you know, i think we have to focus on what we can get done now. >> caller: the thing that makes me angry is yes it is horrendous that those 20 children were killed in connecticut. but what about the thousands of innocent iraqi and afghan children who have been killed, you know, from war crimes in a legal war from the invasion of iraq. >> bill: yes yes. that makes me angry, too. that's why president

, practical legislation. mike thompson, who has been designated by nancy pelosi in our caucus to head up a special task force, has been holding hearings, and i think what's gripping the country is that there are common sense, practical solutions. and standing behind that is the resolve of a president, our president, who i was fortunate to fly to connecticut with. when he came out and spoke, he said this was the worst day of my presidency, and you could see to the marrow of the individual how much this has impacted this president and his resolve to protect our children. and as congress has demonstrated most recently with respect to fiscal cliffs, that it cannot act, i expect the president will. and i applaud him for taking executive action, and doing so where he can, abiding by the constitutional amendment, which, of course, as you know, martin, says there shall be a wel well-regulated militia. it has nothing to do with taking the guns out of the hands of people but regulating and control assault weapons, capacity clips, making sure that there's universal background checks for people. com

that it would have been a more telling benefit for the party if it had been nancy pelosi re-emerging as the speaker of the house and if democrat governors had won in the numbers that they needed to win in as well as legislative bodies being dominated by democrats. i think the cult of the personality had a lot more to do with the end results this time around. in addition thereto, the defective candidacy of the republican nominee. after all, he was a legitimate burden for that party. >> the republicans were the best friend of the democrats because of 2345 whole primary process. those debates i think had a collective effect that was all to the benefit of president obama in the end. >> you had one rational guy, jon huntsman, cam out, and they all pounded on him. >> who didn't act as rationally as he is. remember the old ten for one, he was one of the hands that went into the air. >> he tried a little bit until south carolina. it wasn't just the debate. the pathologies of the debate played out through the campaign. so you had senate seats in missouri and indiana that fell to the

to it. god it is a mess and we have to fix it. when you hear people like nancy pelosi saying the fiscal cliff was not enough on the revenue side. you hear, you know, many politicians chiming in. howard dean, for example, saying in december that the truth is everybody needs to pay more taxes. we're not going to get out of this deficit problem unless we raise taxes across the board. the rich can't solve the problem. i guess that is where i'm going with this is, it seems like, especially from what you're saying susan, everyone will have to pay more taxes to get out of this. >> i actually don't agree with that point. i don't agree with howard dean either. we're not looking more middle class tax increases. the president has been pretty firm on that. we're looking closing corporate loopholes. some people are starting to talk about high frequent financial transaction tax for people that are trading for less than a minute in a position. melissa: none of that will get us there. >> that could raise $350 billion, if you add that with tax cuts could get 1.2 the president is talking about. there are
